NUUR...LIGHT
Surah Noor (chapter 24 verse 35):
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
This is the most oft commented verse in the Quran by Mufassirin (Quranic Scholars) because there is a great deal of meaning in this one verse.
One interpretation is that Allah is talking about putting the Light of iman (Faith) in a believers heart when he says "The example of His light....." because when a believer has Faith in Allah, Allah fills his heart with His light.
Scholars say that the glass here represents the believers heart and it is a great analogy because glass is brittle and strong. It is also transparent. When the light of Allah is shining within the glass, it is visible to others. Such is the believer as iman shines for all to see. His enthusiasm for the religion rubs off to the people around him and his energy is palpable as he seeks to follow Allah's commands.
When Allah mentions the Olive tree that is "...neither of the east nor of the west,..."some Scholars have interpreted this to mean that the tree is not of this world.
The proof that Scholars use to support all I have said above is found in the ending of the verse. "Allah guides to His light whom He wills."
This means Allah guides people to the light of iman (Faith)/belief.
Here is also a detailed explanation of this verse by Dr. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
